Lecture: Understanding Electricity Markets: From Fundamentals to AI-Based Modelling

Understanding how electricity markets work is essential to grasp the challenges of the energy transition. Power exchanges are complex systems involving multiple actors, data flows, and pricing mechanisms that shape how electricity is traded and valued. This presentation introduces and discusses the fundamentals of power markets, with a focus on the Italian electricity market. In the second part, we will explore a real-world application of modelling techniques: combining econometric time-series analysis with AI (Deep Learning) to forecast electricity prices, demand, and trading volumes in high-RES contexts. The goal is to show how a solid conceptual understanding of market dynamics can be coupled with advanced modelling approaches to create solutions that support more flexible, resilient, and low-carbon power systems.
